III. Wellness in the Community
Wellness in the Community
Time with bees and nature is good for everyone
We support young people and adults in personal growth, wellbeing and resilience, and help them to find a genuine love of nature. Our hands-on sessions are open to everyone, and we work especially with people facing social, emotional or physical challenges.
Nature's helping hand
Time outdoors helps improve focus and attention. It has a calming effect that helps people feel more relaxed and happier, and it can ease feelings of isolation by fostering a sense of belonging.
A bee colony is a wonderful teacher. Every bee has a part to play, and the hive only thrives when they work together. That simple idea opens up conversations about teamwork, patience, care and pride in what we achieve.
Our projects
- Mencap Basingstoke, Green Fingers market: we join the monthly community market, from March to November.
- Inclusion School, project IRIS: working with Mencap Basingstoke, we lead the bee and pollinator part of this education project.
- A first horticultural qualification: with Mencap, we run the bee and pollinator element of a programme helping pupils from SEND schools towards a basic horticultural qualification.
- Community gardens: supporting local charities to create bee-friendly gardens where people can learn and grow together.
Kind words
As an SEMH school, engagement and emotional connection are key to learning. The bee-themed curriculum provided that, with not only academic learning but practical experiences such as artwork, cooking and shopping for bee-friendly plants at the garden centre. Ken and Barbara's enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for bees helped inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity across the school.
The project encouraged curiosity and teamwork, giving every learner the chance to get involved and be proud of their learning.
